Kilmeen Drama Group, the three in-a-row winners, are bringing their magic to the Peacock Stage. Their 2013 festival production of The Playboy of the Western World by John Millington Synge, which topped the bill at the All-Ireland Open Drama Finals in Athlone last week, opens on Thursday 23rd May and runs for three nights in our capital city.

It only feels like yesterday that I was in Shercock waiting for Letterkenny DS to take the stage for their final performance of The 39 Steps. This year, all roads lead to West Cork and the home of Kilmeen Drama Group; Rossmore for the All-Ireland Confined Finals 2013.

His immense talent, vision and enthusiasm for theatre were the core reasons behind Kilmeen’s success over the past few years. Success that brought three All-Ireland Open titles; 2006 (A Crucial Week in the Life of a Grocer’s Assistant), 2011 (A Whistle in the Dark) and 2012 (The Weir) plus numerous applauding theatre fans, such as myself, who were totally captivated by his masterful hand on each production. My deepest sympathies go out to his wife Juliet, sons Dylan and Jack. Mugs of tea, ham sandwiches, homemade apple tart and the odd – very odd these days – pint will be consumed.
